Great Auk

Great Auk

The Great Auk was the original 'penguin' of the northern hemisphere. Not having been reliably sighted since 1844, this flightless seabird has become one of the great icons of extinction. This painting is based on recent studies and drawings of a mounted specimen at the Icelandic Museum of Natural History. Oil on masonite, 12" x 16".
